TUTV CHOOSES VITAC TO CAPTION THE MOST POPULAR TELEVISION CHANNELS IN THE SPANISH-SPEAKING WORLD!
August 15, 2007 -- TuTv announced today that the network distributor will add closed
captioning to their three most popular networks, De Película, De Película Clásico, and Telehit.
VITAC, the nation's largest provider of closed captioning, was chosen as the exclusive provider
of Spanish captioning. TuTv is anxious to offer
this new service to its audience and reach out to the Latino deaf and hard-of-hearing.
In a unique technical development, VITAC and TuTv's engineering staffs collaborated
on audio and video and closed captioning over the Internet using IP technology. The result
will be approximately 30 hours per week of accessible closed captioned programs for TuTv's.
""TuTv's commitment to the deaf and hard-of-hearing Hispanic community is quite impressive,"
said Jim Ballard, EVP Sales and Marketing, VITAC. "TuTv's early compliance with the FCC's Spanish
closed caption mandate and support of their Hispanic deaf and hard-of- hearing audience is exceptional.
In fact, Gallaudet University estimates that nearly 20% of deaf and hard of hearing students are Hispanic,
and 10.8% are from Spanish-speaking homes, making TuTv's captioning commitment even more impressive.".
Closed captioning of Spanish-language programming is mandated by the FCC.
Requirements are that by January 1, 2010, 100% of all Spanish-language programming,
with some exceptions, must be captioned. Captions are accessible on all televisions
purchased in the United States after 1993, and are turned on and off using the viewers remote control.
